Gear 2018: Nr 2

For the second installment of our six-part miniseries gear review, we take a look at a product that’s been around a bit longer than just the last year. However, we firmly believe it hasn’t gotten the press it needs. Add to that the benefit to riders and the possibility of faster braking times, we think it’s a no-brainer.

AltRider DualControl Brake

Going fast is one of the best parts of adventure motorcycling. But whatever goes fast must also stop. Hopefully in a controlled manner, and with some prior notice to oncoming obstacles. However, in some instances, prior notice isn’t always forthcoming. It’s in those moments that every second count. Enter the DualControl Brake System from American outfitter Altrider. The system features bolt-on parts that enhance control and reaction time for a rider when using the rear brake pedal, especially in an emergency situation. The main premise of the system being the enlarger plate and a riser plate that create a more precise platform for riders to brake with allowing for faster reaction times.

“The average person takes 0.5 to 1 full second to react to hazards. Traveling at 60 mph / 96 kmh, a rider will travel 25 to 50 f / 6 to 15 m before being able to properly start reacting. Most OEM brake pedals have a single-positioned small footprint, yet most Adv riders substantially change foot positioning as they switch between standing and sitting.” If a riders foot is not already situated correctly in place to activate the rear brake pedal, the rider is potentially doubling the reaction time and distance he or she will need to make an emergency stop. “When seated the natural position of your foot tends to point down. When standing, the tip of your foot will rise as you straighten your leg. An Adventure rider will often switch between different riding positions and thus their foot position is constantly changing, this was our motivation in creating the DualControl Brake System. Making the brake pedal easier to access for the rider can add precious reaction time to allow safe braking.”

Pros: Faster braking times avoiding possible collisions. Relatively cheap considering other upgrades to your motorcycle

Cons: You might spend more time doing braking turns now and replacing disc pads

Tip: An optional ‘brake snake’ is available for R1200 GS models.
